Theogamia (Sacred Marriage)
Article written by Xandra~Deina, Priestess-in-training of Zeus and Poseidon
Athenian Calendar Date: Month of Gamelion (Date uncertain; scholars say 25th-26th, varying dates and yearly cycles)
Honouring: Zeus and Hera (Teleia and Teleios of perfection/fulfillment)
Origin: This festival has many origins and variations throughout Greece, specifically variations in Argos (restoration of Virginity), the Boeotian city of Palatia that held Daidala, and the more known Attic cult festival. We see traces of this cycle even in cults where Zeus is less prevalent, considerably so on the Island of Samos. On Crete we also see the re-enactment annually on the river Theren which it is said to be “in imitation of what was transmitted from the origin” (Diod. Sic. 5.72.4). However, there are scattered Near-Eastern comparisons to the idea so finding a true origin is impossible academically.
What is Theogamia?
Theogamia was centered around the bride, or the cycle in which Hera becomes a wife. Each differing festival shares in the idea of a “cycle” during which Hera goes through a return to the point of virginity or “pre-marriage” and then is married again during Theogamia. In Greek cities we see the critical positioning and replication of this cycle as a moving element of a Kore becoming “Telete” or fulfilled by the future status of producing legitimate children. This is very similar to the idea of marriage in which an unmarried woman is moved to her husband’s home to be married.
With the Theogamia, Hera was honored as “the young and glorious bride of Zeus” (Nikainetos, ap. Ath. 15.673b) on Samos during which Zeus received offerings, and Hera was celebrated as the “last of all, his flourishing wife” (Hes. Theog. 921). This festival, which has little evidence for its full recreation, is reconciled as a mythic/ritualistic cycle through marriage and the life of a woman. The month of Gamelion is given its name from “Gamos” or marriage, celebrating the rite of marriage. It is the month to be married for many.
This festival focuses on:
- Marriage/ Unity/ Fulfillment of purpose
- Celebrations and Blessings
- Honoring Hera and the women’s cycle
- Praising the King and Queen
Offerings to Zeus and Hera
- White wine
- Flowers
- Veils/fabric
- Wedding garments or clothing
- Cakes and pastries
- Votive offerings of homes, and marriages (Images work)
- Incense
As these gods are both in the Ouranic state please be aware of how you give offerings. Even to the Orphics as they are seen as the Cosmological forces of Sky and Earth offerings seemed to be done Ouranically. Because of this all offerings should be given in a sense of shared unity and libations if possible should be watered down or shared.
Ways to Celebrate Theogamia:
- Recite hymns to Zeus and Hera
- Do a ritual honoring the marriage and re-enact it.
- Give libations and offerings to Zeus and Hera.
- Give any pieces of clothing that are representative of a veil to Hera
- Do devotional acts; familial gratitude, reminisce of partners, Dance (Or sport event as women held races in Samos), sing, Celebrate Unions (friends or family), Celebrate/ reminiscence on marriages of parents or yourself.
- Honor ancestors or past relationships
- Research Zeus and Heras marriage / break stigma on it
- Offer images of friends and family
Celebrating Theogamia at the Sanctuary
At the Sanctuary, we promote the Theogamia ritual hosted by The Divine Cove, with Priestess-in-training Xandra.
Theogamia performed by Priestess in training Xandra will be held on Zoom alongside other servers who will join this ritual. This is a festival which will be revolving around the sacred marriage of the King and Queen. It will center Hera and honor Zeus as the ancient ritual suggested this focus on the female element honoring her pre-precursor an independent great goddess. In this ritual, Hera will be crowned and honored as Hesiod calls her the “last of all, his flourishing wife.” in regards to Zeus. This ritual will also include the participants ability to praise their own partnerships, platonic and romantic inclusive to all genders and sexualities.
