Hekate’s Deipnon

Athenian Calendar Date: End of every lunar month.
Honouring: Hekate and the Restless Dead
Origin: This festival is theorised to have taken place in Athens at the end of every month and has been compared to a festival that took place on the 30th of every month at the Temple of Lagina. Though it’s unclear if this festival is an ancient tradition.

What is Hekate’s Deipnon?

A monthly holiday to honour Hekate with offerings and devotional acts. Deipnon translates to ‘supper’ and thus this holiday is also referred to as ‘Hekate’s Supper’.

  • Offerings and appeasement
  • Protection
  • Restless Dead

Offerings to the Hekate

  • Milk
  • Honey
  • Wine
  • Olive oil
  • Grains
  • Pomegranate
  • Cakes (such as small honey cakes)
  • Bread
  • Plants and herbs associated with the underworld (e.g. asphodel, cypress, mint)
  • Candles or torches
  • Votive offerings such as depictions of dogs and polecats.
  • Oil lamps, torches, candles.

If you are honouring Hekate as a chthonic goddess (in association with the underworld or the dead), offerings should be buried, burnt, or poured into the ground. Note: Poisonous plants should not be burnt.

Ways to Celebrate Hekate’s Deipnon

  • Write and recite a hymn to Hekate.
  • Light a candle as an offering to Hekate, representing her torch.
  • Cook a meal for Hekate and offer it to her.
  • Meditate with Hekate.
  • Conduct a sacred procession to the crossroads.
    • This could be with others or by yourself. A procession involves moving sacred items from one location to another. You may start inside and move outdoors, or the other way around. You may start at your front door and move to your altar, or just before your altar if you wish to do so.
  • Give offerings to Hekate.
  • Do a series of devotional acts for Hekate.
  • Dress in clothing or accessories that remind you of Hekate.
  • Donate to a shelter (dog shelter, homeless shelter, women’s shelter etc.)
  • Take care of dogs.
  • Do a ritual in honour of her.
  • Research about Hekate.
  • Honour your ancestors.
  • Choose an epithet a month to focus on.
  • Set intentions for the next lunar cycle.
  • Ask for her protection and guidance.
  • Do divination with Hekate.
  • Read a book for Hekate.
