Diasia

Article written by Xandra~Deina, Priestess-in-training of Zeus and Poseidon

Athenian Calendar Date: 23 Anthesterion
Honouring: Zeus the Kindly and Ancestors
Origin: This is a festival of unknown origin, most likely originating on the mainland around Athens. Scholars believe it comes from a proprietary-based spring time festival welcoming the new season. It most likely started with the want to appease the archaic daimon Meilikhios, who was later conflated as an epithet of Zeus.

What is Diasia?

A festival meant to appease the spirit of Melikhios equated with Zeus. We see Zeus referred to as the Daimon in Orphic hymn 73, associated with the prosperity he can bring by cleansing miasma or ancestral misfortunes.

This was a great feast for all people, especially women and children. However, as this is a khthonic aspect of Zeus, the day itself has a solemn and grim emotion behind it. It was a nocturnal rite that ended with a feast or gifts to children to brighten the mood.

According to Thucydides, there were no blood sacrifices during this rustic nighttime festival. Instead there were cakes or pastries of the animals given. According to other scholars, wealthy Athenians gave blood offerings alongside incense. As a holokaust ritual takes the full animal, most Athenians were unable to spare the money to offer a whole animal. Although the full length of the festivities outside Athenian walls is unknown, the consensus is that attendees spoke of misdeeds they had done, or that their family have done, asking for forgiveness or prosperity to fulfil its place.
